An eight year journey!

Restoring the lyric theatre

When Ex-Tropical Cyclone Ita came to call on Granity over Easter weekend in 2014, The Lyric Theatre lost its roof. In the aftermath of the storm, with rain dripping through the destroyed ceiling panels, it was hard not to think that this much-loved building was lost forever. But in a giant leap of faith, and with an amazing group of volunteers, the Society instead began the long journey of restoration including earthquake strengthening the entire building......over eight years later we reopened.
The journey

Volunteers at work

Right from the start, volunteers have been a big part of the restoration of The Lyric Theatre. From the heartbreaking job of removing wet and sodden carpets, fixtures and fittings, to the paperwork and coordination of building consents and contractors, the preparation of major fundraising applications and the production of fundraising events and activities.....it was hard work for sure!
There was also lots and lots of painting involved!
New beginnings

the restoration

This is what happens when you combine fortitude, dedication and belief with a hard working group of volunteers and a supportive and well managed community organisation. Thanks to our funders, our fundraisers, Society members, volunteers and contractors for going above and beyond to restore a place that we can all be proud of!
Ownership of The Lyric Theatre was transferred to The Lyric Theatre Granity Incorporated on November 10th 2023.  Check them out at www.thelyric.nz
